Billings is the largest city within the State of Montana within the United States. It has the largest metropolitan area in more than 500 miles or 800 km and is the major city for the Billings Metropolitan Area. This trade area is made up of over a half a million people making it the biggest metropolitan area between Denver and Calgary and between Spokane, Washington and Sioux Falls, South Dakota.
The city of Billings is located in the south-central region of Montana. It is the county seat of Yellowstone County. In 2010 the county had a population of 147,972. The city of Billings had a population of around 104,170 during the 2010 Census, making it the only city in the state to surpass 100,000. The city of Billings continues to have the biggest growth out of whichever city within Montana and is experiencing a strong economy and rapid growth.

The city was nicknamed in the year 1882 the "Magic City" due to its growth as a founding railroad. The city was named for a former president of the Northern Pacific Railroad Frederick H. Billings. The city of Billings is the distribution and trade center for the majority of the state of Montana, western parts of South and North Dakota and Northern Wyoming. As among the biggest trade areas within the entire United States, Billings has also become the retail destination for much of the same region. There are much more hotel accommodations in Billings than within whatever area within a 5-state area. This makes it an ideal city to host concerts, a variety of conventions and sporting events.

Billings future was established as a pretty significant trade and distribution center as the city was mainly founded as key railway center. Additionally, since there is no sales tax within Montana, the city of Billings is a retail destination for a lot of North Dakota, Wyoming, South Dakota, along with most of Montana. The city of Billings is also an energy center as it sits amongst huge natural gas and oil fields as well as being located on the biggest coal reserves in the USA.
