Forklift Safety Guidelines and Tips
Each and every year, there are approximately 20,000 cases of accidents that are related to utilizing forklifts within the US alone. And every year about 100 deaths are attributed to forklift accidents. Fortunately, correct training regarding operation procedures and maintenance can considerably reduce the risk of accidents. The basic safety regulations and tips below should be followed when utilizing a forklift.

Training
It is the duty of the employer to make sure that the proper training program is given to the staff and that forklift operators are trained.. Training includes a combination of lectures, presentations, discussions and practical hands-on training. Reevaluation should take place every three years. Operators of forklifts must be up-to-date with current forklift safety regulations. Forklift training program content covers dangers of forklift operations, general workplace hazards, dangers related to operating the specific forklift that the employee would be utilizing and workplace lighting and surfaces. An employee must be 18 years of age or over to operate a forklift.

Maintenance
Forklift inspections should be carried out on a daily basis to be able to ensure the safe and proper functioning of the equipment. The inspection involves keeping a checklist of items and reporting any problems at once.

The Work Place
Safe operation of a forklift involves a safe and clean workplace. A work site that is safe means establishing "traffic lanes" which are only designated for forklift use. Warning systems like for example horns and flashing lights should be in place to be able to indicate when there is an approaching forklift. Forklift docking stations must be inspected daily and kept in good repair.

General Guidelines
Included in the general safety guidelines of utilizing a forklift are respecting the load capacity of the forklift and never going over the maximum; avoiding known hazards on the ground, such as wet spots or oil spills; raising or lowering the load only when the forklift is stationary; ensuring there is enough clearance for the load; and keeping hands, arms and legs in the vehicle during operation.
