Fuel Storage
The smaller fuel canisters and larger refueling tanks must be stored in a different complex or building so as to be more secure. To add more safety, all areas in the vicinity should have "No Smoking" signs are clearly displayed. Ideally, the fuel tanks must be stored in a safe enclosure which can just be accessed by authorized personnel. It is essential for the operator's safety, as well as everyone they work with, that these safety regulations are strictly complied with.
The fuel enclosure itself has to be protected from vehicle impact. Utilizing retaining systems such as concrete bumpers for instance, can carry out this job. Other retaining methods can be utilized. It is also important to always have a fire extinguisher nearby at the refueling station. Additionally, anybody who is operating the fueling station is required to be trained and also has to be trained to operate the fire extinguisher safely and effectively. With regards to the fuel aspect, safety is of utmost importance.
Operator Training
The OSHA or the Occupational Safety and Health Administration require that everybody who is utilizing an industrial powered forklift or lift truck is trained correctly. This training includes both the hands-on training and the classroom portion. Once the training sessions have been finished, the individual must be tested to be able to prove that they understand the training materials. A part of this training also covers the correct method of the refueling process of the forklift. The training also includes site-specific procedures and the precautions involved for the refueling of any unit they could be driving.
Medical Treatment
There should be a Material Safety Data Sheet or MSDS center situated within the facility where the lift truck is operating. This center will include the MSDSs for all chemicals and solvents that are used on site. This would also cover the acid in the lift truck battery, along with the propane that is used to refuel the unit.
MSDSs sheets need to be available for all personnel at all times. If any exposure incident happens for example, the person has to be evaluated immediately. If any medical attention is considered necessary, to should be given without any delay. Generally, if you are uncertain if medical treatment is considered necessary, as a general rule; have the injury examined by a doctor if you really think it is severe. Always better to be safe than sorry.
