Forklift Battery Safety
The big industrial sized batteries used to run electric lift trucks should be charged regularly and properly maintained. Safety procedures must be followed while connecting the battery to the charger. It is essential to check fluid levels in the battery.
Personal Protective Equipment - PPE
It is important for employees working with a lift truck battery to wear eye protection. Other PPG consist of goggles, safety glasses, or a full face shield. The right way to protect both clothing and skin from other residue or leaked acid is to put on thick rubber gloves on the hands and an approved apron on the body.
Emergency Eyewash Station
Next to the charging area must be an emergency eyewash station. The path to the post should not be blocked and an injured worker must be able to go to the eyewash station from the charging place within 10 seconds without running.
Charger Safety
The charger and battery should be at the same amperage. It must be turned off while the battery is being plugged in.
Open Flames
Open fire are prohibited in the vicinity of a charging area and battery. Do not allow items like lighters or matches to be utilized when someone is checking the fluid levels in the battery.
Ventilation
The battery charging are also has to be correctly ventilated. The recharging process could cause fumes to be released. These fumes are both poisonous and explosive.
