Choosing Between Cushion & Pneumatic Tires
Significantly contributing to the safety and handling of the machine are forklift tires. They also impact the maintenance expenses. The kind of forklift determines to a large extent the type of tire since nearly all forklifts are constructed with a particular frame which accepts only a specific kind of tire. It helps to understand the properties of both pneumatic and cushion tires prior to choosing a tire.
Instructions
1 For tire specifications, you must check your forklift owner handbook. Most likely your forklift runs either on pneumatic tires or cushion tires. This would limit your options to the kind of tire for which the forklift frame is built.
2 Make certain you know the particular type of forklift you are utilizing. Electric forklift trucks and electric pallet jack trucks are usually made to utilize cushion tires that do not need a lot of friction. Pneumatic tires are usually for forklifts which function on diesel or liquid propane gas.
3 Make sure you know what type of terrain you will be using the forklift on. Soft cushion tires are constructed for even terrain whereas pneumatic tires are suitable for rough grounds. Cushion tires, if utilized on uneven surface, can cause the forklift to get stuck since they are set lower. Pneumatic tires perform well on packed stones, crushed concrete and gravel but not on really rough terrain and potholed surfaces.
4 Check space limitations. Forklifts utilized mainly indoors should be able to pivot in limited areas. Cushion tires work better than pneumatic tires in those types of situations.
